The Spirituality Of Everyday Life: Transforming Ourselves And Spiritualizing Everyday Life!

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

When we talk about spirituality of everyday life we are talking about bringing a special sense to everything we do. It means approaching life with a sense of awe and wonder and is associated with feelings of care and concern for others, for the Earth and all living forms. It also means having a sense of gratitude, being thankful and having a feeling of being blessed by an energy or power greater than ourselves.

Engagement with everyday life means life in the family, at work, when socializing, being involved in recreation, sports, doing the shopping or indeed in anything we do whether we are dealing with other people or not. It also means engagement with the mystery of the sacred energy of the universe of which we are a part, without the religious baggage of the past.

My motive for raising these issues is a concern for the state of the world. We face an economic and ecological meltdown, serious social division and widespread psychological alienation. The problems are well known and the experience of more than a century to establish a more humane society through conventional political and religious institutions has not occurred suggesting that new ways must be found to deal with these challenges and bring about a happier world.

There is a lot of interest in various forms of spirituality, but also a widespread feeling that traditional religions have lost relevance. I don’t necessarily share this view, and I would want to bring traditional believers, as well as those who yearn for a spiritual renewal for their lives outside of traditional religious practices, along with me. There is also widespread belief that a serious engagement with spiritual issues is a critical in bringing about lasting change at the collective level, as well as creating the conditions for deep fulfillment.

It seems to me that a twenty first century spirituality of everyday life involves expanding our consciousness around six themes. I call these the six themes of consciousness:

What is the true nature of the self and reality generally; How do we define our needs; How do we satisfy those needs; How do we define a successful life and what motivates us in that life; What is the span of our care and concern for others, for the Earth and for other living forms; How do we define our social and civic commitments?

One of the most important aspects of a spirituality of everyday life involves moving from a sense of self as a separate isolated individual defined in terms of I, me and mine to a realization that each of us, in the words of Eckhart Tolle, does not have a life, but that we are life. In this sense life has us we are life’s instrument or servant. I call this the universal self. Developing a universal self is a pre-eminent spiritual quest. A limited sense of self cuts us off from the universe and we tend to experience our self in this limited way, as all that we are and all that we have. We resist every experience that threatens this sense of self and seek nice experiences and avoid unpleasant ones.

The field of development psychology teaches us that the six themes of consciousness can be defined by people at ever increasing levels of complexity and they can undergo development and growth throughout the whole of life. For many, the themes of consciousness plateau and remain fixed at that level throughout life. For others, their lives are an ever increasing spiral of growth and development. This is a natural process and everyone has the potential to expand their spiritual of awareness and consciousness.

The spiritual challenge that we face is being called to find a way of expanding our consciousness and awareness around the six themes, (particularly the development of a universal sense of self) and to find ways of transforming these themes into an engagement with everyday life. To do this we need to develop the capacities of what I call the seven paths of spirituality of everyday life.

The first path involves qualities needed to live fully aware moment by moment so that we are able to adjust our actions in real time as events unfold. This is about what Eckhart Tolle calls living in the NOW. Living in the NOW involves engaging with everyday life moment by moment as life unfolds and in being able to monitor our actions so as to be able to adjust what we are doing as events unfold

The second path involves the capacity to treat everything that arises as an opportunity to learn and make the most of every moment. This path is about a transformation from a mindset of unilateral control to one of using each moment of everyday life as an opportunity for infinite possibilities. This path opens people up to the realization that the life that they are has the potential for enormous growth around the six themes of consciousness.

Developing the capacities to walk these two paths contain useful guides about how we can develop a universal self where we become a servant of life

The third path involves the capacity of learning how to take full responsibility for the choices we make. This is the secret to living as a full participant in the game of life rather than as a victim of circumstances.

The fourth path involves the potential of gaining mastery of our emotions so that they become an ally in helping us deal effectively with the fortunes of life. All emotions even emotions like anger and fear have their place in our lives. The secret here is to use the energy of the full range of emotions as a positive influence rather than being a prisoner and at the mercy of our feelings.

The fifth path involves the capacity to learn how to turn a crucial conversation where opinions differ, where the stakes are high and where emotions run hot into a positive outcome. This means being able to tell your truth without offending others, even when you disagree with them. Most people when confronted by a crucial conversation become aggressive or withdraw rather than buy a fight. Learning about this path has an important part to play in helping us recognize unconscious attachments relating to the self and has the potential to create an opportunity for a major lift in consciousness.

The sixth path involves the capacity to learn how to turn disagreement into the best decision even if it means giving up a cherished position when a better argument is presented. This is about skilful negotiation where the best decision is the goal rather than winning an argument to save face. This path is about how to participate in finding common interests in order to make the best decisions.

The seventh path involves the capacity to make promises and honor those promises. Learning to walk this path ensures that things get done efficiently and effectively and good relationships are preserved.

The fifth through to the seventh paths are about the practical ways of engaging in a spirituality of everyday life through our interpersonal relationships. These relationships are a critical area of living a spirituality of everyday life.

The achievement of the “Good Society” and the creation of the conditions for happy and fulfilled lives will involve massive transformations and change as we repair the Earth’s ecology, create a new economic order, redress the social divisions and heal the widespread psychological alienation. A necessary step in this process is for a significant number of people, sufficient to influence the course of events, to develop a spirituality of everyday life. This involves building a worldwide social movement whose aim is the spiritualization of everyday life.

If you seek a spiritual basis to your life and feel that becoming part of movement dedicated to the spiritualization of everyday life would fit in with your values and aspirations then visit http://www.bobcalkin.co.nz and join us in setting about playing a part in the transformation of ourselves and our world.

Belief – transform your life

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Belief is such a trans-formative energy. When you believe in something, anything in fact, it has the power to transform your life.

The papers and the media are having a field day with the ’swine flu’ as I sit to write the Scribe for May. Do I believe a word of what they are telling us? No. Not for one second do I believe we are in danger, or that a flu coming from pigs has resulted in death.

Do I believe it is yet another scare tactic handed down by people who are filled with greed and having power over others? Yes. I do.

Belief is truly amazing. Belief in SELF and in your ability to do what is right for you, no matter what, is truly an outstanding gift to have.

We are all blessed with belief. We all have free will. We can all choose to believe whatever we choose to believe. That is why I choose not to believe this latest attempt, by a select few, to fill our lives with panic and mayhem. I get to choose this belief because I have placed my trust in my inner knowledge. My in-tuition.

Intuition is tuition from within – we all have it – we don’t all use it or trust it, but we all have it. I trust my intuition more than anything else. It guides me and allows me to see through this latest ‘power over’ attempt.

I can see clearly that swine flu has nothing to do with Mexico or pigs and everything to do with yet another greedy company who has come up with a ‘marvellous’ way to generate a whole heap of cash at our expense. I mean to say, what’s the life of 300,000 pigs mean to anyone…when a company stands to make billions of dollars for spreading a pack of lies to unsuspecting millions…?

Who really cares that every country has gone into overdrive and spent millions of dollars to protect their people from a danger that doesn’t even exist? Who cares?

I care. I truly care. With the whole of my heart and soul I care. I am one person. I have my belief, just as the drug company has theirs, just as those who believe there really is a danger, have theirs. We all believe what we want to believe, but can one person’s belief make a difference?

Well, maybe me on my own holding my belief can’t do much to make a difference to the world around me. But…if enough of us believe then the greedy companies that continue to put their own needs first and hold us to ransom as a result would not be able to get away with what they do. If enough of us believed in our own ability to see through what we are being told then maybe 300,000 pigs wouldn’t be dead, nor a country shut down, nor billions of dollars wasted…maybe, just maybe if enough of us stopped buying into these ‘terror tactics’ then they would cease to exist?

We live in a society where the people/companies with the most power rule. We have stopped trusting ourselves and we have placed that trust into an other’s hands. We have become very clever you see, because we have science that can identify, without a shadow of doubt, that something exists – and then we buy that. We all stop and we buy that. We don’t dig any deeper, we don’t wonder whether someone has been ‘bought’, we don’t question whether it feels right, we just accept. Yep, it’s in the media, it’s in our papers – it must be truth!

The thing is….truth comes from within. Truth is not something you are told, it is something you feel deep within you. Thing is…we have forgotten how to go within. We have forgotten what it feels like to trust our inner knowledge – our in-tuition. We have simply forgotten.

We hand our power over and we believe that we are small and insignificant and that we can’t make a difference. We buy that. We buy it bucket-loads. We live it, breathe it and eat it for breakfast. When enough of us do it…our whole society can be pretty much co-erced into believing anything by anyone with power over us. Truth is, we all have power and we can all make a difference!

And to hit home how much one person can actually do….the story of one very brave and very determined woman named Rosa Parks comes to mind…

When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man fifty four years ago on December 1, 1955, she was tired and weary from a long day of work.

Rosa Parks was physically tired, but no more than you or I after a long day’s work. In fact, under other circumstances, she would have probably given up her seat willingly to a child or elderly person. But this time Parks was tired of the treatment she and other African Americans received every day of their lives, what with the racism, segregation, and Jim Crow laws of the time.

The rest of Parks’ story is American history…her arrest and trial, a 381-day Montgomery bus boycott, and, finally, the Supreme Court’s ruling in November 1956 that segregation on transportation is unconstitutional.

Rosa Parks believed in herself. Above all else, she believed that the treatment she and other African Americans were receiving was not right, it did not sit with her and so she did what she felt was right. She refused to give up her seat.

Look how much one person believing in SELF can do for the community and for the world!

So…I ask you…

How many times have mother’s had gut feelings about their child not being well only to be scoffed at by the medical profession…only to be proven right later on?

How many times have people been told it’s impossible to do something only to find a possible way to do it?

How many times have people been told that they only have a short time to live only to ‘beat the odds’ and live to a ripe old age?

How many times have children been told they are no good and won’t amount to anything only to go on and become hugely successful?

Why???

Because of BELIEF.

Every one of these stories is about someone standing up for what they believe in. It’s about someone believing in SELF above all else. It’s knowing that the power comes from within and that the change we wish to see in the world – or in our life – begins with US.

When we don’t believe in our SELF we get to believe whatever anyone else wants us to believe. We get to live in fear and lack and pain and struggle and believe that this is our lot in life.

Belief is amazing. Truly amazing.

No athlete, no footy player, no gold medallist can get to where they stand without belief in SELF.

Do you think President Obama got to where he is today – a black man leading the United States of America because he believed what other people thought? No, he believed in himself. He believed he was the right man for the job and he did not waver no matter how hard the road was to walk. You don’t have to have a big dream like Barack Obama to believe in self. Just believe in SELF.

Belief comes from within. We all have it….and, we all get to choose what we believe.

Every moment of every day we get to choose. If we don’t, we end up believing what the ‘world at large’ wants us to believe – which is that we are powerless and others have a strong-hold over us.

There is NO power in that. Not for any of us. Not for the community. Not for Mother Earth.

Victim consciousness doesn’t serve anyone anymore. It is time for each of us to wake up and start trusting our own inner guidance, our own truth. It is time to stop buying into all of what doesn’t feel right and start buying into what your heart knows as truth.

We hold the power. Individually and collectively. We are what the world needs…provided we stand strong and in our own power and live our lives from our heart and not our head.

It is time to trust your own power. To believe in your SELF. Trust your in-tuition to give you the answers you look for ‘out there’ and know that you are your own best judge of what is right and what is not. It is time to listen to that small voice that stirs from within and trust that you know what is best for you.

It is time for us to take responsibility for what we have created and then accept that we all did this together which means we can all change it for the better – together!

But…it starts with each one of us. One person at a time. Just like Rosa Parks.

I know what I believe… Now it’s your turn!
